How your Myotherapist can support you through your pregnancy journey
Pregnancy

Your Myotherapist can play a valuable role in supporting you through your pregnancy by addressing musculoskeletal discomfort, pain, and imbalances that can arise during pregnancy. Pregnancy-related changes in posture and the body's center of gravity, weight distribution, and hormonal changes can contribute to various musculoskeletal issues.

Myotherapists are highly trained and Myotherapy is safe during pregnancy. There are certain positions, techniques, and pressures that are modified to ensure your safety and comfort. We also have a specialised ‘belly’ pillow that allows you to lie face down on our table for treatment. We also only use creams and oils that are safe for use during pregnancy.
Here are some common musculoskeletal problems that can occur during pregnancy:

Lower Back Pain: Increased weight and changes in posture can strain the lower back muscles and ligaments, leading to lower back pain.

Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP): PGP, also known as symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), involves pain and discomfort in the pelvic area due to increased hormone levels causing ligament laxity and pelvic joint instability.

Sciatica: Pressure on the sciatic nerve due to changes in posture and increased weight can lead to sciatic nerve pain, often characterised by pain radiating down the leg.

Round Ligament Pain: The round ligaments support the uterus and can cause sharp or stabbing pain on the sides of the abdomen due to stretching and tension.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Fluid retention and hormonal changes can lead to swelling and pressure on the carpal tunnel, causing symptoms like numbness, tingling, and pain in the hands and wrists.

Rib Pain: As the uterus expands, it can push against the ribs, causing discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen and ribcage area.

Hip Pain: Hormonal changes and shifts in weight distribution can contribute to hip pain, particularly on the sides of the hips.

Postural Changes: The growing abdomen often leads to changes in posture, including an increased lumbar curve and forward-leaning shoulders, which can result in muscle imbalances and discomfort.
Edema (Swelling): Fluid retention is common during pregnancy and can lead to swelling in the ankles, feet, and legs.

Plantar Fasciitis: Increased weight and changes in gait can contribute to plantar fasciitis, causing pain in the arches and heels of the feet.

Muscle Cramps: Muscle cramps, particularly in the legs, are common during pregnancy and can be related to changes in circulation and mineral imbalances.

Diastasis Recti: Separation of the abdominal muscles (rectus abdominis) can occur due to the stretching of the abdominal wall to accommodate the growing uterus.
Cervical Pain: Hormonal changes and increased fluid retention can affect the cervical spine and lead to discomfort.

Joint Instability: Hormonal changes can lead to ligament laxity, which might result in joint instability and a higher risk of injuries.
Here's how your Myotherapist might approach treating the above pregnancy-related concerns:

Assessment: Your Myotherapist will take a thorough history and assess your unique needs, considering factors like stage of pregnancy, existing conditions, and areas of discomfort. This assessment guides the development of a personalised treatment plan.

Pain Relief: Your Myotherapist can use techniques such as massage, myofascial release, dry needling and trigger point therapy to address muscle tension, pain, and discomfort that can arise in areas like the lower back, hips, pelvis, and shoulders.
Postural Support: Pregnancy often leads to postural changes to accommodate the growing fetus. Your Myotherapist can provide guidance on maintaining optimal posture and offer exercises to strengthen supportive muscles.
Pelvic Floor Health: Your Myotherapist might advise you how to activate your pelvic floor muscles to improve their function, especially since these muscles play a crucial role during pregnancy and childbirth.
Edema Management: Swelling and fluid retention are common during pregnancy. Your Myotherapist may use techniques to promote lymphatic drainage and reduce edema in areas like the ankles and legs.
Stress Reduction: Pregnancy can bring emotional and physical stress. Your Myotherapist may incorporate relaxation techniques, such as gentle massage and deep breathing exercises, to promote relaxation and well-being.
Sciatica Relief: Sciatic nerve pain can occur due to pressure on the sciatic nerve during pregnancy. Your Myotherapist can address muscle imbalances and tension that contribute to sciatic pain.
Tailored Exercises: Your Myotherapist can provide safe and appropriate exercises to help maintain muscle strength and flexibility during pregnancy. Strengthening the core, pelvic floor, and back muscles can support posture and reduce discomfort.
Preparation for Labor: Your Myotherapist can offer techniques to promote relaxation and body awareness that may be helpful during labor and childbirth.
Collaboration: Your Myotherapist will often collaborate with other healthcare providers, such as obstetricians, midwives, and physical therapists, to ensure comprehensive care during pregnancy.
Home Care: Your Myotherapist might provide you with stretches, exercises, and self-care strategies you can use at home to manage discomfort and promote well-being.
