What is Myofascial Cupping?
How myofascial cupping benefits your muscles and fascia!
Myofascial cupping is a therapeutic technique that involves the use of specialised cups to create suction or negative pressure on the skin's surface. This technique is used to address various musculoskeletal issues, particularly those related to myofascial tissue, which is the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles throughout the body.

Here's how myofascial cupping works:

Cup Placement: Myofascial cupping involves the use of plastic cups placed on the skin over specific areas of the body that are affected by muscle tension, trigger points, or myofascial restrictions.
Creation of Suction: The cups are either manually pumped to create a vacuum (in the case of handheld cups) or use a suction device (in the case of stationary or vacuum cups) to create negative pressure. This suction lifts the skin and superficial layers of fascia, creating a vacuum seal within the cup.
Tissue Decompression: As the cups are placed and suction is applied, they gently lift and stretch the myofascial tissue. This decompresses the tissue, increasing blood flow, and promoting the release of fascial adhesions and muscle tension.
Static or Dynamic Cupping: Myofascial cupping can be performed in two primary ways: static and dynamic. In static cupping, the cups are left in place for a specified duration, typically ranging from a few minutes to 15-20 minutes. In dynamic cupping, the cups are moved across the skin to massage and stretch the myofascial tissues.
Removal of Cups: After the designated time or when the therapist determines the treatment is complete, the cups are removed. This often leaves temporary circular markings on the skin, known as "cupping marks" or "cupping bruises." These marks typically fade within a few days.

Benefits of Myofascial Cupping:

Pain Relief: Myofascial cupping is often used to alleviate muscle pain and tension, including conditions like myofascial pain syndrome and trigger points.
Improved Range of Motion: The stretching and release of myofascial tissues can help improve joint mobility and flexibility.

Enhanced Blood Flow: The suction effect of the cups can stimulate blood flow to the treated areas, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.
Relaxation: Many people find myofascial cupping to be deeply relaxing, as it can release muscle tension and reduce stress.
Myofascial cupping is considered very safe when performed by our trained and qualified Myotherapists at Harmony Myotherapy, as we always follow proper protocols and guidelines.
These are the considerations to be aware of:

Bruising and Discoloration: One of the most common side effects of myofascial cupping is the development of circular markings or bruises on the skin, often referred to as "cupping marks." These marks are typically painless and temporary, but they can be a cosmetic concern for some individuals. The severity and duration of cupping marks can vary depending on the suction level and individual skin sensitivity.
Blood Disorders: Individuals with bleeding disorders or those taking anticoagulant medications should exercise caution with myofascial cupping, as the procedure can cause skin bruising and potentially exacerbate bleeding issues.
Medical Conditions: People with certain medical conditions, such as skin conditions/rashes, open wounds, infections, or a history of skin allergies, should inform their practitioner before undergoing myofascial cupping.
